Room 229 - Saturday Evening

Guillermo was going to be teaching Graham how to play video games and as the evening got closer, he was trying to not feel so nervous …he had gotten out a couple consoles for them to play, choosing the Nintendo 64 and a Playstation 4 as consoles to start with and then had agonised over what games to play.

He decided to wait until Graham got there before choosing what games they could play that evening.

He did have a quite a few empanadas left that he’d made for the room following his baking sessions and he’d gotten soft drink as well.

Now that everything was set up and the room was ready for a gaming session, all he had to do was wait for Graham.

It was fine. This was going to be fine.

And hark! There was a Graham, feeling maybe just a little bit nervous but mostly just excited, just to spend more time with Guillermo and learn about video games and of course eat jelly beans.

The empanadas would also be a very welcome surprise, one that really shouldn't have been a surprise, if you really thought about it.

But he made his way down the hallways to Guillermo's room and knocked on the door, and then wondered if he got the right room, and if he hadn't, then whose room would he have gotten? And that was almost just as exciting, it could be a mystery!

Guillermo took several deep breaths at the knocking and then panicked briefly when he considered it might be someone else knocking and it wasn't Graham and he would have to wait even longer but he steadied himself and walked over to the door and opened it.

He smiled brightly when he saw that it was Graham and he could feel his cheeks start to blush slightly already as he stared at him, then he realised that he hadn’t actually said anything, “Graham, hi …you made it!” he managed to stammer out, “um … come in, please,” he stepped back to let Graham into the room.

"I did make it!" Graham confirmed cheerfully, as he followed Guillermo into the room. "And, more importantly..." He took a moment to reach dramatically into his cloak, to then pull out a Ziploc back full of mostly pale yellow-specled jelly beans. "I brought the jelly beans! I actually have two bags..."

He reached into the other side of his cloak and pulled out another Ziploc bag with literally every other color.

"Apparently, they don't have bags with just popcorn flavored ones, and so I had to buy a few bags, and I separated them out."

Because of course he did.

"There might be a few caramel corn ones mixed in there, though. They look very similar."

Guillermo smiled at that, “they look incredible, I can’t wait to try them” he said and then added rather shyly, “I also have some empanadas, I made them when I was doing my baking sessions earlier, there’s plenty to choose from,”

Again, not really a surprise with how much Guillermo had been baking lately.

"Awwwww," said Graham, his eyes going wide with the brilliance of a freshly-struck idea, "they should make empanada-flavored jelly beans some day! Those would be great!"

But his ears sent a little more red and his cheeks just a little more pink as he laughed a little and added, "Not as great as the ones you make, though, of course, but still pretty good!"

Guillermo went even redder at that praise, “you know, I think I could try and make you a jelly bean flavoured empanada, I mean if you would like me to,” he tilted his head slightly in an effort to stop the blushing, “I think it could definitely be done,” he said as he thought to the recipes he liked to use for his empanadas and how he could adapt them to make a jelly bean flavoured one.

"Well," said Graham, with a little bit of a touched, flattered grin at the offer, "I was thinking an empanada-flavored jelly bean, but I wouldn't say no to an jelly bean-flavored empanada, either! If anyone could pull it off, it would definitely be you, Guillermo! Pastry wizard that you are!"

It shouldn't have been possible for Guillermo to go that red, "I mean ... I could probably make both?" he tried, he had never made a jelly bean before but he was sure he could learn how to make them, "I mean I would be happy to try and make them for you, it would be something different to make with empanadas, I would enjoy making new recipes for you," he said shyly.

"If anything," Graham offered out hopefully, optimistically, "it would still be a lot of fun to try, right? And maybe I can even help! Although I'm not nearly as good at cooking as you are, I wouldn't want to get in the way of you working all your culinary magic!"

Guillermo smiled warmly at that, “I would love to do cooking with you,”he assured Graham, “I think that would be a lot of fun, working out the new recipes and then you can taste them to see if they work,” he said enthusiastically.

"I am a pretty good taste-tester," Graham noted, looking thoughtful for a moment before quirking a brow at Guillermo in an attempt to be convincing.

'Good' could probably be debatable, though, considering his sometimes more unique palate, but that just meant more wiggle room to experiment!

"And, who knows? Maybe you might actually teach me something, and I can expand my own repertoire beyond choco-chip pancakes!"

Guillermo smiled at that , “it would also be nice to have company while I cooked,” he added shyly, “there’s usually no one around when I do cook,” he admitted.

"That sounds like it could be kind of nice, too, though," Graham pointed out. "Kind of...meditative, you know? A little peace and quiet, to focus on all your amazing food. Are you sure I wouldn't end up just being a distraction?"

Guillermo was reasonably sure but well didn’t exactly want to reveal the reasons why Graham could potentially distract him, he went even redder.

“It’s nice cooking on my own but some company would also be nice,” he tried to assure Graham, “you wouldn’t be a distraction,”

He hoped.

"Well, then, in that case," Graham declared, "I would be happy to keep you company while you cooked! And not just because that just means I can enjoy the fruits of your labor even quicker!"

Although that was a nice bonus.

"Now," he said, his eyes lighting up for the thing that brought him here in the first place, "how about those video games?"

“Then I’ll definitely let you know when I do try to make those recipes,” he promised and turned his attention to the video games he had selected for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 4, “we do have a lot of games,” he admitted with a grin, “I haven’t decided which ones to play, are there any that you think you’d like to try from the totally moddable games we have?”

"I could definitely take a look!" Graham said, tilting his head a little at all the games and also wondering how anyone would even know where to start. "There's so many! Which ones are some of your own fav--"

Graham stopped, suddenly, blinking a little as his eyes caught on something that he immediately reached for.

"Ohhhhh!" He said, brandishing the box victoriosly for a moment before going in for a closer look. "I actually know this one! We watch this movie just the other day in Espionage class!"

And you can't pull out an N64 and not have meta for GoldenEye!

“That is a great choice,” Guillermo smiled at Graham’s choice, “it’s one of my favourites,” he revealed, “and it’s not too complicated to learn to play either,” he added.

"Not too complicated to learn sounds pretty promising," Graham said with a grin, and then went to pass the game over to Guillermo with a little bit of a sweeping bow, and his tone went oh-so-seriously. "Guillermo, I am ready for you to teach me the way of the video game, show my your video game ways!"

Guillermo smiled brightly as he took the game, still blushing bright red as he went to sent up the console and load the game.

He passed one of the controllers to Graham as he waited for the game to load, “I thought while we were waiting I could teach you how the controllers work?” he offered.

"That would probably be a good idea," Graham admitted, after watching Guillerno set everything up with a fascinated curiosity, a curiosity that transferred then to the controlled, which he turned over in his hand and inspected.

He particularly liked all the buttons, especially the one that moved around in a circle.

"I don't think I'd even know how to hold this correctly!"

Guillermo watched Graham look over his controller with a smile to see him so fascinated with the controller and examine it as he picked up his own one, “its not really that hard to learn,” he assured him and he began to very handwavily since its been years since I’ve played the N64 go over what each button did in relation to the game, “did that make sense? he wasn’t sure it did, “I can go over it again if you’d like?”

Graham was trying his best to listen carefully to all the instructions and explanations, but, by no fault of Guillermo's, it was all sounding a little foreign. Simple enough, that should help, and what started as mouthing the controls to help him remember better quickly great in to repeating them quietly under his breath.

"I think I'vr got it?" he answered, with uncertainty. "Maybe? I think it might be one of those things where I just need to jump in and try it and just see how it goes."

Guillermo nodded understandingly at that, “we can also set the difficulty level so that’s it not too hard,” he offered, “that should also hopefully help as well,”

And Graham opened his mouth as if to say something, stopped, then frowned a little bit on thought as he considered it for a moment.

"Is the hard difficulty," he wondered, "really hard? Because maybe then, we should actually start with the hard, and that way, when it's too hard and we go to easy, it'll be a breeze, right?"

Totally how things worked!

Guillermo hadn’t thought of it like that, he tilted his head as he considered the settings, “i think once you get used to the controls, it shouldn’t be a problem, we could try and see how things go?” he suggested, “you do get more options to you playing the harder levels but if it gets too hard then I can change the settings back to easy?”
